WinLibrary Relaunch

WinLibrary has finally returned! 🥳🎉

After a long period of partial service, WinLibrary is finally fully operational again and ready to serve traffic.

What took so long?

For a long time we had not been satisfied with the way WinLibrary served traffic. After a lot of thought, we decided that the best course of action would be to completely remake the WinLibrary backend and finally get it tailor made for our needs instead of relying on pre-made tools like NGINX Directory Listing.

Because of how everything was set up, we were forced to switch all our servers to Linux. It was pretty ironic that a site dedicated to collecting and archiving versions of Windows didn't run on Windows. That problem has now been mitigated and we are proud to announce that once again, after over 2 years of running on Linux, WinLibrary has "declared it's independence" from Linux and is fully running on Windows Server.

We are a small team of volunteers running this project. We all have lives, jobs, school and other activities. For short, we have lives (crazy, I know). This means that we are not always able to move at the pace that we'd want to, which causes delays and ultimately inconveniences you, the user.

We are very grateful for all the messages of support that everyone sent our way. They were always a huge motivation boost.

That's it? Really?

It may not seem like a lot, but remaking the backend (upload & download services) from scratch took a lot of time because of our commitment to a great experience for the end user.

However, that is not the only thing we have done in this time. We have also restored WinLibrary Asia. Our Asian users will now be able to download files from us at higher speeds again.

On top of that, we would like to announce a new server location in the United Kingdom. This will contribute to alleviating the bandwidth issues that our server located in Eastern Europe has had recently.

In order to further try and improve the speeds to our Eastern European server we have also upgraded the internet uplink from 10GBps to 25GBps.

So... what next?

Next we would like to work on restoring our server in the United States and get it up and operational again using our improved backend as well as exploring the possibility of hosting even more servers in other countries around the world.

We hope you're as excited for the future as we are! Thanks for reading!
